Undergoing an adult tonsillectomy can be a painful experience, particularly during the recovery period. The most intense pain typically occurs between days 5-8, and it’s essential to follow post-operative care instructions closely to reduce the risks of infection and bleeding.
Pain Management and Recovery Tips
It is crucial to eat regularly during recovery, as this helps prevent post-operative infection and reduces the risk of bleeding. The most significant risk of bleeding occurs between days 5-14, so managing your pain and keeping up with nutrition is vital.
Pain Relief Options
- 2 Panadol every 4 hours during the day, with a maximum of 8 per day.
- 1 Palexia taken 2 to 3 x a day alongside Panadol every 4 hours during the day. The dosing time for Panadol and Palexia are not linked to each other. That means you can add Palexia if Panadol has not relieved the pain.
- For additional pain relief when already taking regular Panadol and Palexia add Endone 5 mg every 6 hours.
Important Warnings
- Always eat when taking pain relief: Taking pain medications on an empty stomach may cause dizziness or nausea. Ensure you eat regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel hungry.
- Avoid certain medications: Do not take Nurofen, Aspirin, Disprin, Ibuprofen, or Fish Oil and herbal medicines during your recovery, as these can increase the risk of bleeding.
- Cepacol Forte or Difflam lozenges can be used anytime for breakthrough throat pain.
Preventing Post-Operative Complications
- Eat Regularly- and what foods to avoid!
Eating is crucial during your recovery to prevent infections and support healing. Soft foods that are easier to swallow, such as yoghurt, soups, and smoothies, are recommended in the first few days. Cold food such as ice cream is extremely popular because your brain senses temperature before pain. That means it is more comfortable to eat very cold food. Acidic food such as oranges and raw tomato can cause discomfort. - Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of fluids helps keep the throat moist and reduces discomfort. Avoid very hot or acidic drinks, which can irritate the throat. - Watch for Signs of Bleeding
The risk of bleeding is highest between days 5-14. If you notice significant bleeding, contact your surgeon or attend the Emergency Department of the closest major hospital immediately. - Avoid Strenuous Activities
Rest is essential during the first 14 days after surgery. Avoid any physical exertion or strenuous activities that could increase blood pressure and therefore the risk of bleeding.
