Otoplasty (Prominent Ears)

Otoplasty, commonly known as ear pin back surgery, is a procedure to correct prominent ears. It’s one of the most joyful operations we perform, as children and adults alike are often thrilled to see their new ears when the dressing is removed.

In Sydney, otoplasty is primarily performed on children and teenagers, but occasionally, adults undergo the procedure—often fulfilling a lifelong desire for correction. Please note in Australia, the Medicare rebate does not apply once you are 18 years old. This means you may be unable to use Private Health Insurance to cover your hospital stay, and otoplasty is rarely performed in public hospitals. If you’re considering otoplasty in Sydney, it’s advisable to consult early.

Prominent Ear Surgery: The Anatomy of Prominent Ears

Otoplasty addresses the anatomical features contributing to prominent ears, affecting approximately 3 to 5% of the population. Interestingly, around 60% of people with prominent ears have a family history of the condition.

Three main factors typically contribute to prominent ears:

  1. Unfolding of the antihelix: The natural curve of the outer ear cartilage is less pronounced.
  2. Deep conchal bowl: The cartilage near the earhole pushes the ear outward from the skull.
  3. Large earlobe: This can add to the overall prominence of the ears.

Most patients present with a combination of these factors, but every case is unique.
