The Initial Consultation

We understand that many parents are reluctant to have their children undergo surgery for appearance-related concerns. However, kids are often pleased with the result, especially as it helps them avoid teasing—a common reason parents consider the surgery.

Over the last 30 years Dr Gillian Dunlop has worked as a Sydney based ENT SpecialistSurgeon with a special interest in paediatric facial plastic surgery. She will ensure your child is well and that their ears function as they should. She will then examine your child, focusing on the three issues addressed by otoplasty surgery:

Unfolding of the normal curves of the ear: Is the antihelix unfolded?

Excess cartilage: Is too much cartilage pushing the ear away from the skull?

Earlobe size: Is the earlobe too large? (This is rare.)

What happens during the initial consultation?

Dr Dunlop will assess your child’s ear structure, discuss the ear pinning procedure, and answer any questions you may have.

How do I prepare my child for the consultation?

It’s helpful to explain the purpose of the visit in simple terms and reassure them that it’s a safe and routine process.

Can adults also have an initial consultation for otoplasty?

Yes, adults considering otoplasty surgery are welcome to schedule a consultation to discuss their options.

Will my child need any tests before the surgery?

Generally, no special tests are required, but Dr Dunlop will review your child’s medical history to ensure they are suitable for surgery.

What medications should be avoided prior to surgery?

Blood thinning medications such as Nurofen and Vitamins should be avoided for 2 weeks before and after surgery. Usually the blood loss is a teaspoon per ear and ear bruising is minimal but these medications could increase blood loss and possibly lead to asymmetry.
