What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct prominent or protruding ears by reshaping the cartilage. The goal is to correct asymmetry while addressing any physical or aesthetic concerns the patient may have. It is typically performed on children aged 5 to 7 and adults of all ages.

Please note: In Australia, Medicare rebates generally do not apply for adults over 18, and otoplasty is rarely performed in public hospitals. Early consultation is recommended to understand your eligibility and coverage.

Causes and Anatomy of Prominent Ears

Prominent ears affect approximately 3–5% of the population, often with a family history. Contributing factors include:

Unfolded Antihelix

Lack of natural curvature causes
ears to stick out.

Deep Conchal Bowl

Extra cartilage near the ear canal
pushes the ear outwards.

Large Earlobes

Add to the overall prominence.

Most patients have a combination of these features, and treatment is tailored accordingly.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Initial Recovery: Mild swelling and bruising for 1–2 weeks
  • Return to School/Work: Most resume normal activities within 1 week
  • Supportive Headband: Worn at night for 4 weeks post-op
  • Follow-up Care: Ongoing support from Dr Dunlop and her team to monitor healing

What are the possible complications with otoplasty?

  • Bruising that may mean a 2nd operation so avoid Nurofen and vitamin E for 2 weeks before the surgery
  • Infection – antibiotics will be given for 1 week to prevent this
  • Partial stitch extrusion through the skin – rare but this can usually be trimmed in the office

There is a 100% chance of asymmetry because we are all slightly asymmetrical.
Overall there is a 6% revision rate with otoplasty though this will differ with experience.
